Garry Botterill

Garry served in the Royal Navy for 6 years before joining the Police where he served for another 29.5 years. During this time he championed the wellbeing and mental health of colleagues in many ways. He set up the force Gym Club and encouraged officers and staff to participate in sporting activities as a way to help manage stress. He became aware of colleagues struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and after successfully gaining a Churchill Fellowship he travelled to the USA and the Netherlands to research how dogs can help Veterans mitigate the symptoms of their PTSD. He set up Service Dogs UK in 2015 which was the first PTSD assistance dog programme in the UK to gain international accreditation by Assistance Dogs International (ADI) and the first to become part of Assistance Dogs UK (ADUK). Service Dogs UK has become a successful charity and is an established leader in trauma informed animal assisted intervention. Garry’s interest in mental health matters and the wellbeing of his friends and colleagues led to him co develop the first ever Police Mental Health app Backup Buddy which is used by many forces and other services in the UK. He became a Wellbeing and Mental Health Champion and then joined the Wellbeing Team as a Wellbeing Consultant for Sussex Police and Surrey Police. The knowledge he has gained through being the Operations Director of Service Dogs UK and in his Wellbeing Consultant role has been utilised to provide support to Police Officers and Staff through the National Police Wellbeing Service (Oscar Kilo). Garry continues to work with the NPWS team to lead and progress the OK9 Wellbeing and Trauma Support Dog scheme to the Police and other emergency services. The OK9 scheme won the prestigious Inside Out Award for innovation in 2021 and continues to be one of the most progressive and impactful wellbeing initiatives in the UK.

Dave Tipping

With an extensive background in animal training and behaviour, David brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the world of dog training. Starting his career working with horses and farm animals, David quickly developed a deep understanding of animal behaviour and the intricate art of training.

His passion for animals led him on an incredible journey, spending over a decade in zoological training and behaviour, working closely with a variety of species in zoos around the world. David's specialisation in the canine species became evident as he delved into the fascinating world of domestic dogs.

David has the privilege of serving as the Behaviourist and Manager for Service Dogs UK. In this role, he combines his exceptional knowledge of canine behaviour with his dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of both rescue dogs and veterans. Through the innovative training programs he develops, David helps individuals find support and security by pairing them with an assistance dog and nurturing them through the incredible journey that the programme provides. The charity is certified by Assistance Dogs International (ADI) and are members of Assistance Dogs UK (ADUK) and is providing ground breaking support for those suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Dave is keen to bring the knowledge gained to a workplace near you!
